Empowering Independence with Clear Insights

The Pathway to Independence (P2I) Framework is a comprehensive, validated, customizable assessment system designed to guide effective transition planning for adolescent and young adults (ages 14-adulthood). By highlighting key adaptive living and social-emotional domains, the framework offers a clear picture of an individual’s readiness for independence. This holistic view helps educators, families, and providers create targeted goals and supports that foster lasting independence.

The Essential Domains for Independence

The P2I Framework reflects the core domains supported by research and best practice for evaluating adolescents and young adults as they prepare for a transition to greater independence. It integrates the key skills necessary to support informed, person-centered decision-making about postsecondary education, employment, independent living, and community participation.

Providing Clarity and Confidence for Every Type of Transition

Our assessments deliver meaningful insights into adaptive living and social-emotional skills, helping individuals, families, and teams make informed decisions—no matter what type of transition lies ahead.

Planning for College

Families often assume that strong high school academics naturally lead to college success. In reality, college places a premium on life and self-management skills—self-advocacy, healthy routines, social navigation, and stress management—all of which directly influence academic performance.

The P2I Assessment system helps identify an individual’s strengths and areas of need before college begins, enabling more effective, personalized transition planning.

IEP Transition Planning

IEP transition planning requires schools to develop measurable post-school goals in education/training, employment, and independent living beginning no later than age 16. These plans must reflect the student’s preferences and interests and outline the services needed to reach those goals.

The P2I Assessment System is built specifically for students who learn differently. Whether a student has an SLD, ASD, or OHI designation, P2I gives IEP teams the insight they need to create targeted, effective transition plans with a clear roadmap toward greater independence.

Treatment Planning

Although fostering independence is central to treatment programs, accurately evaluating readiness remains a complex task. The P2I Assessment System measures key skills like the ability to self regulate, manage finances and daily tasks, and maintain and develop personal relationships, all necessary components of a successful and independent adult lifestyle. Combine assessments to create a comprehensive Adaptive Life and Social Emotional Skills analysis of strengths and areas of need, which can be used in treatment planning and progress monitoring. By quantifying and measuring critical skills, programs are able to improve individual and programmatic outcomes.

Entering the Workforce

Whether entering the workforce after high school or college, the transition can be complex and requires a distinct set of skills. Financial management, community engagement, and strong employability skills—such as teamwork, problem-solving, digital literacy, and initiative—are essential for success. The P2I Assessment System offers a comprehensive evaluation of these skills to support a smooth transition to independent living and employment.
